Linn DSM Buying Guide: Which Network Player Is Right?
Linn's DSM range spans compact all-in-one systems, highly configurable modular players and flagship digital sources. This guide explains where Majik, Selekt and Klimax fit, what changes between them and how to choose the right DSM for the system you actually want to build.
A good Linn DSM buying guide should begin by clearing up one common misconception: a DSM is not simply a streamer with a Linn badge on the front. Depending on the model and configuration, it can act as digital source, preamplifier, system hub, phono stage, TV audio hub and, in some cases, the core of a complete just-add-speakers system.
That flexibility is useful, but it also means choosing between Majik DSM, Selekt DSM and Klimax DSM is not only about moving up a price list.
You first need to decide what job you want the DSM to do.
Do you need an all-in-one network music player with amplification built in? A modular source that can evolve with the system? A dedicated high-end digital source feeding separate amplification? Or a hub for an Exakt-based Linn system?
Once that is clear, the range becomes much easier to understand.

Linn DSM buying guide: the current range
Linn currently positions Majik DSM, Selekt DSM and Klimax DSM across three distinct levels of its network music player range.
| Model family | Position in range | Core idea | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Majik DSM | Entry point | All-in-one network music player | Listeners who want a compact Linn system with minimal boxes |
| Selekt DSM | Modular mid/high level | Configurable network music player built around interchangeable modules | Systems that may evolve or need a more tailored configuration |
| Klimax DSM | Flagship | Reference network music player and preamplifier | High-end systems where digital source quality is a central priority |
All three sit within Linn’s wider streaming ecosystem and are designed around network playback, connected sources and software features such as Space Optimisation.
The most important differences are in architecture, configurability, digital-to-analogue conversion, casework, connectivity and the role each product is intended to play within the wider system.
What does DSM actually mean in a Linn system?
In practical terms, a Linn DSM is the control centre for digital and connected audio sources.
Linn’s current network players can stream from a home network and supported online services, while also accepting additional digital and analogue sources depending on the product and configuration.
Linn’s own current network-player range supports services and technologies including TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready operation on compatible current models. Linn also builds Space Optimisation into its network music players.
That means a DSM can potentially replace several traditional boxes in a system.
For example, you may not need a separate streamer and preamplifier. In some configurations you may not need a separate power amplifier either.
That is why the correct DSM choice depends as much on system architecture as it does on performance level.
Majik DSM: the all-in-one route
Majik DSM is currently Linn’s entry point into the DSM range and Linn describes it as an all-in-one network music player.
That wording is important because Majik’s appeal is not simply that it sits below Selekt.
It is about simplicity.
If you want a Linn digital source, control centre and amplification in one enclosure, Majik can make a great deal of sense.
Who should consider Majik DSM?
Majik DSM is likely to be most relevant if:
- you want to reduce the number of boxes in the system
- you are building a new Linn system from scratch
- you want streaming and connected-source functionality in one unit
- you prefer a simpler fixed architecture over a modular product
- you want a current Linn DSM without immediately moving into Selekt-level configurability.
The key word is fixed.
Majik is intended as a complete all-in-one solution rather than a modular platform built around swappable Selekt cartridges.
For many buyers, that is an advantage rather than a limitation.
Selekt DSM: the modular route
Selekt DSM is where Linn’s digital range becomes significantly more configurable.
Rather than buying one fixed specification, you begin with the hub and then build the unit around the job you need it to perform.
That can include source-only, preamplifier or amplified configurations, depending on the modules selected.
This is the defining reason to consider Selekt DSM.
Classic Hub or Edition Hub?
Selekt is available around two principal hub designs: Classic Hub and Edition Hub.
The Selekt DSM Classic Hub provides the more straightforward chassis option, while the Selekt DSM Edition Hub moves to a more elaborate enclosure and additional physical refinements.
The hub choice is only the beginning, because the internal module configuration then determines how the DSM operates within the system.
Why Selekt’s modularity matters
Selekt can be particularly useful if you do not want your system design frozen on day one.
You may begin with a source/preamp configuration feeding an existing power amplifier, then change the internal architecture later as the rest of the system evolves.
Or you may configure Selekt as the centre of a more integrated system with internal amplification.
That makes it very different from choosing between two conventional streamers with fixed specifications.
What about DAC choice in Selekt DSM?
The digital-to-analogue conversion stage is one of the areas where Selekt can be configured at different levels.
Current Selekt architecture supports different DAC options, including Organik configurations. Linn’s documentation also confirms Organik support across Selekt DSM variants, with stereo and dual-mono arrangements depending on the configuration.
This is important because it lets the buyer separate two decisions that are often fused together in other products:
- what physical system architecture do I need?
- what level of DAC performance do I want?
You do not necessarily need to answer both at the highest level immediately.
That flexibility is one of the strongest reasons to consider Selekt over a simpler all-in-one product.
Klimax DSM: the flagship digital source
Klimax DSM sits at the top of Linn’s current network music player range.
The current generation was designed around Linn’s Organik DAC architecture, with Linn describing Organik as an entirely in-house digital-to-analogue conversion system combining FPGA processing with a discrete conversion stage.
Klimax is available in more than one form depending on system requirements.
The standard Audio version is intended for music-source connection, while the AV version adds HDMI connectivity for movie sources. Linn also offers Klimax System Hub for systems that use Exakt connections rather than conventional analogue outputs.
If you are considering the standard analogue-output route, the Klimax DSM Audio is the relevant Rococo product page.
Who should consider Klimax DSM?
Klimax makes most sense when:
- the wider system is already operating at a very high level
- digital playback is a major source
- you want Linn’s flagship DSM architecture
- Organik is a central part of the buying decision
- the rest of the system can justify the level of source investment.
As with Klimax LP12, buying the flagship simply because it is the flagship is not especially useful advice.
Klimax DSM should make sense within the complete system.
Selekt DSM vs Klimax DSM: where is the real dividing line?
The obvious answer is performance level, but that is only part of it.
The deeper distinction is flexibility versus flagship integration.
Selekt DSM is built around modular choice. You can shape the product around the system you want to create and alter parts of that architecture later.
Klimax DSM is designed as Linn’s reference digital source and preamplifier platform, with Organik built into the core product and a more fixed flagship architecture.
For someone who enjoys developing a system gradually, Selekt can be extremely attractive.
For someone who already knows the end point and wants the flagship source at the front of the system, Klimax may be the more coherent choice.
Do you need amplification built into the DSM?
This question can eliminate several options very quickly.
If you already own a power amplifier you intend to keep, you may not need internal amplification at all.
In that situation, a DSM operating as source and preamplifier may be the cleaner choice.
If you are building from scratch and want fewer boxes, an all-in-one or internally amplified Selekt configuration may be more appealing.
If you want separate amplification, Rococo’s Linn power amplifier range can be considered alongside the DSM rather than after it.
Do not pay for system architecture you do not need.
What if you already own good speakers?
That is often the easiest place to start.
If you have passive loudspeakers you already like, the DSM decision becomes partly about how you want to drive them.
You might choose:
- an all-in-one DSM route
- a Selekt configuration with internal amplification
- a DSM feeding a separate power amplifier
- an Exakt-based path where compatible Linn architecture is appropriate.
Speaker sensitivity, impedance, room size and listening levels also matter when amplification is part of the decision.
The DSM should therefore be chosen with the speakers in mind, not simply added to them afterwards.
What if you are building a complete Linn system?
A complete Linn system opens up more choices because the source, amplification and speakers can be planned together.
This is where technologies such as Exakt become relevant.
Linn’s current Klimax DSM provides Exakt Links for connection to products including Exaktbox and compatible integrated Exakt loudspeakers, while Selekt can also form part of Linn’s broader Exakt ecosystem depending on configuration.
If you are starting without legacy equipment to accommodate, it can be useful to think about the final system architecture before choosing the DSM.

Space Optimisation comes into the decision too
All current Linn network music players sit within Linn’s Space Optimisation ecosystem. Linn describes the technology as a way of modelling the relationship between loudspeakers and the listening room so room effects can be taken into account in system setup.
This matters because the DSM is not just processing music files.
It can also become part of how the complete system is configured for the room.
That is particularly relevant where speaker placement has to work around furniture, room shape or practical living constraints.
Space Optimisation should not be treated as a substitute for good speaker placement, but it is a meaningful part of the Linn DSM ecosystem.
Do you need HDMI for the television?
For many buyers, yes.
A modern DSM is often expected to handle more than music.
Linn’s network-player architecture can accommodate TV and movie sources, but the exact HDMI provision depends on the model and configuration.
Klimax DSM, for example, is available in Audio and AV variants. The AV version adds HDMI connectivity, including eARC support.
Selekt can also be configured around TV and AV requirements.
If the DSM is going into the main living room, decide whether television integration matters before choosing the specification.
It is much easier to design that in at the beginning than discover afterwards that the system was configured around music-only assumptions.
What streaming services do Linn DSM players support?
Linn’s current network players support a broad range of streaming and network playback options.
Current Klimax DSM specifications include TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Deezer, AirPlay 2, Roon Ready and internet radio services. LinnDocs also confirms current Roon Ready support across current Majik, Selekt and Klimax DSM generations.
You can also play locally stored music over the network.
The practical question is therefore less about whether the DSM can stream and more about how you prefer to control and organise your music.
If Roon is central to your listening, confirm the current model and software support. If you mainly use Qobuz or TIDAL, that may make the user-experience conversation simpler.
What about vinyl and other analogue sources?
Choosing a network music player does not mean abandoning analogue.
Linn’s DSM philosophy is built around acting as a hub for multiple sources.
That means a turntable can remain part of a DSM-based system where the appropriate analogue or phono input is available in the chosen product/configuration.
This can be particularly attractive if you want streaming and LP12 playback controlled through one central system rather than maintaining entirely separate analogue and digital chains.
As always, exact input requirements should be checked against the particular DSM configuration before ordering.
Should you choose Majik, Selekt or Klimax DSM?
A useful shortlist looks like this.
Choose Majik DSM if…
- you want a compact all-in-one Linn network music player
- simplicity matters more than modular internal upgrades
- you are starting a system from scratch
- you want fewer boxes and straightforward integration.
Choose Selekt DSM if…
- you want the system architecture tailored to you
- you value modularity and future configuration changes
- you may want internal amplification now or later
- you want access to different DAC and output configurations
- you are building a system that may develop significantly over time.
Choose Klimax DSM if…
- you want Linn’s flagship digital source
- Organik DAC is central to the system
- the rest of the system operates at a comparable level
- you want a dedicated high-end source/preamp rather than Selekt’s modular approach
- you are building towards a flagship Linn or Exakt-based system.
Do not choose a DSM from the specification sheet alone
DSM products contain a lot of technology, and that makes it easy to compare them by checkboxes.
DAC architecture. Inputs. Streaming services. HDMI. Amplification. Exakt. Space Optimisation.
All of those things matter.
But the right DSM is ultimately the one that fits the wider system.
A highly modular Selekt configuration can be more appropriate than Klimax in one system. A simpler Majik DSM may make more sense than an elaborate separates setup in another.
The product hierarchy tells you where each model sits.
It does not know what you already own.
Listen to the DSM in the system you want to build
A Linn DSM buying guide can narrow the architecture and help you understand the range, but the final decision is easier once you hear the relevant options.
Rococo Systems can demonstrate Linn equipment through our London Showroom and our Epping Demonstration Facility, located between Ongar and Epping.
If you already have speakers or amplification you intend to keep, tell us what they are. If you are building a complete system, we can compare the different routes rather than making the DSM decision in isolation.
You can explore the current Linn network music player range or book a demonstration to hear the relevant options.
The best DSM is not automatically the most configurable or the most expensive. It is the one that does the jobs your system actually needs, at the level that makes sense for how you listen now and where you want the system to go next.
