Selekt DSM vs Klimax DSM: Which Should You Choose?
Selekt DSM and Klimax DSM can both sit at the centre of a serious Linn system, but they approach the job very differently. This comparison looks at modularity, Organik DAC, amplification, connectivity and system role to help you decide which route makes more sense.
Selekt DSM vs Klimax DSM is not simply a comparison between a less expensive Linn streamer and a more expensive one. Both can act as the digital heart of a high-level system, but the way they are designed, configured and developed is fundamentally different.
Selekt DSM is built around modularity. You choose a hub, then configure outputs, DAC modules and, where appropriate, amplification around the system you want to create.
Klimax DSM takes a different approach. It is Linn’s flagship network music player and preamplifier, designed around Organik DAC and a more fixed reference architecture.
That distinction matters more than a specification-sheet hierarchy.
The better choice depends on whether you value Selekt’s flexibility and ability to change system architecture over time, or whether you already know you want Linn’s flagship digital source at the front of the system.
You can browse Rococo’s current Linn network music players alongside this comparison.
Selekt DSM vs Klimax DSM: the key differences
The easiest way to understand the two products is to look first at the role Linn intends each one to play.
| Area | Selekt DSM | Klimax DSM |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Modular high-performance network music player | Flagship Linn network music player and preamplifier |
| Architecture | Configurable hub, cartridge and DAC system | More fixed reference architecture |
| DAC | Configurable, including Organik options | Organik at the core of the current platform |
| Amplification | Can include internal power amplification | Designed primarily as source and preamplifier |
| System flexibility | Very high | Focused on flagship source performance |
| Exakt | Can form part of an Exakt system | Provides Exakt connectivity for compatible Linn systems |
| Typical buyer | Wants a system tailored around current and future needs | Already knows they want Linn’s flagship DSM architecture |
That table explains why the comparison is not as simple as asking whether Klimax is “better”.
Selekt can do things Klimax is not intended to do, particularly around internal amplification and modular system design.
Klimax, meanwhile, is designed specifically as the flagship source and control product rather than a configurable all-in-one platform.
Selekt DSM: flexibility is the main attraction
The strongest argument for Selekt DSM is not that it sits below Klimax in the range.
It is that Selekt lets you build the product around the system.
The current Selekt DSM range can be configured with different output cartridges, DAC arrangements and, where required, internal power amplification.
That gives you considerably more freedom over how much work one chassis performs.
For example, Selekt can operate as:
- a network source and preamplifier feeding an external power amplifier
- a compact source, preamplifier and power amplifier in one main enclosure
- part of a more complex multi-channel or active setup
- a hub within a Linn Exakt system.
That modularity is particularly useful if your system is likely to change.
You do not necessarily need to decide at the outset whether you will always use separate amplification or whether you may eventually move to a different loudspeaker architecture.
Klimax DSM: the flagship-source approach
Klimax DSM is intended for a different kind of buyer.
Rather than starting with a modular platform and choosing how far to configure it, Klimax begins from Linn’s flagship source architecture.
The current generation is built around Organik DAC and uses Linn’s latest high-level DSM design. Linn describes Klimax DSM as an integrated digital music player and preamplifier, and current documentation confirms support for Exakt, Space Optimisation and Linn’s wider network playback ecosystem.
The Klimax DSM Audio is therefore most relevant if you already know the role you want the unit to perform: high-level digital source and control centre feeding suitable amplification or a compatible Linn system.
It is much less about configuring a box around several possible futures.
It is about beginning with the flagship source.
Does Selekt DSM also have Organik DAC?
Yes.
This is one of the reasons the comparison has become more interesting.
Organik is not exclusive to Klimax DSM. Linn has extended Organik into compatible Selekt DSM configurations, including stereo and specific mono implementations depending on the cartridge architecture.
That means “I want Organik” no longer automatically means “I must buy Klimax DSM”.
The more useful questions become:
- which Organik configuration do you need?
- do you want Selekt’s modular output architecture?
- do you need internal amplification?
- does Klimax’s flagship enclosure, electronics and integrated design better match the level of the complete system?
Organik narrows one gap between the platforms, but it does not make them the same product.
Why Klimax DSM is more than an Organik DAC in a different case
It would be too simplistic to compare an Organik-equipped Selekt with Klimax and assume that the DAC name makes the two equivalent.
Klimax DSM was designed as a complete flagship architecture.
The current generation uses its own chassis design, control interface, clocking, analogue circuitry, connectivity and power-supply arrangement around the Organik conversion stage.
Independent review coverage also treats Klimax DSM as a complete source rather than merely a DAC platform. What Hi-Fi’s review, for example, compared the finished product as a reference-level streamer against other high-end digital sources rather than reducing its assessment to the converter alone.
For the buyer, the sensible conclusion is straightforward:
Compare complete products, not technology labels.
Where Selekt DSM has the practical advantage
Selekt’s modularity creates several practical advantages that Klimax does not try to replicate.
Internal amplification
Selekt can accept Power Out cartridges with Class D amplification.
This allows a Selekt system to drive suitable passive speakers directly without a separate power amplifier.
Klimax DSM is not designed as an integrated amplifier in this way.
If your objective is a very high-quality but compact system with fewer boxes, Selekt may therefore be the more appropriate product regardless of where Klimax sits in the hierarchy.
Changing the architecture later
Selekt’s cartridge system allows the internal configuration to change as the system evolves, subject to compatibility and available modules.
You might begin with external amplification, then change part of the architecture later.
That adaptability is one of Selekt’s defining features.
More tailored expenditure
Selekt also gives you control over where the budget goes.
If you already own power amplification you love, there is no need to specify internal amplifiers simply because the product can accept them.
If Organik is your priority, you can concentrate the configuration there.
This is modularity doing something useful rather than merely providing more boxes to tick.
Where Klimax DSM has the clearer role
Klimax becomes easier to understand once you stop trying to configure it like Selekt.
Its role is much more specific.
It is aimed at systems where digital source quality is already a major priority and where the surrounding equipment justifies Linn’s flagship DSM platform.
Klimax is particularly logical if:
- you already use high-level separate amplification
- you want Linn’s flagship digital source and preamplifier
- Organik is part of a wider Klimax-level system decision
- you are building an advanced Exakt system
- you do not need Selekt’s internal amplification options.
In that situation, Selekt’s additional configurability may simply be unnecessary.
Edition Hub makes the comparison more interesting
Selekt DSM Edition Hub moved the Selekt platform physically closer to the kind of construction associated with Linn’s upper-tier products.
The current Edition Hub uses an all-machined aluminium enclosure, revised control dial, mirrored glass fascia, large display and Utopik power supply as standard.
The Selekt DSM Edition Hub is therefore the version most likely to enter a serious comparison with Klimax DSM.
Independent coverage has made the same distinction. What Hi-Fi described Edition Hub as a significantly more elaborate version of the Selekt platform while emphasising that its modularity remains central to the product.
That does not mean Edition Hub becomes “Klimax Lite”.
The two products still solve different problems.
What about Utopik?
Utopik is Linn’s current power-supply technology and is fitted as standard to Edition Hub. Linn also supports Utopik upgrades across a number of compatible products in its wider range.
Klimax DSM’s current platform also sits within Linn’s latest power-supply and digital architecture.
Again, the existence of shared technology should not be used to pretend that product architecture is identical.
Linn frequently develops technologies across different levels of its range while tailoring their implementation to each product.
How do the two compare for Exakt systems?
Both can sit within Linn’s Exakt ecosystem.
Current Klimax DSM documentation confirms Exakt Link connectivity for compatible devices including Exaktboxes and Exakt loudspeakers.
Selekt can also become the hub for an Exakt architecture, and its modular cartridge system can make it particularly interesting where multiple channels or internal amplification are being planned.
The better choice therefore depends on the Exakt system itself.
If you are building towards Linn’s flagship source architecture, Klimax may be the obvious hub.
If you want a more configurable system whose amplification architecture can evolve inside the Selekt chassis, Selekt may be more appropriate.
Do both support Space Optimisation?
Yes.
Space Optimisation forms part of Linn’s current DSM ecosystem and can be used with both Selekt and Klimax systems.
This means room optimisation is not in itself a reason to choose one over the other.
The real distinction lies in the source, DAC and system architecture around it.
What if you already own a power amplifier?
This situation tends to favour a simpler comparison.
If you already have amplification you want to keep, you do not need Selekt’s internal Power Out capability.
You can configure Selekt with line outputs and use it as source and preamplifier, or consider Klimax DSM for the flagship source route.
At that point the decision comes down more heavily to:
- budget
- DAC and source priorities
- future upgrade plans
- system level
- whether you value Selekt’s modularity even if you are not using internal amplification.
If separate amplification is part of your preferred architecture, Rococo’s complete Linn systems can help illustrate how source, amplification and speakers fit together rather than making the DSM decision in isolation.
What if you want the fewest possible boxes?
This is where Selekt can have the clearer argument.
An appropriately configured Selekt DSM can combine network source, preamplification, DAC and power amplification in one principal enclosure.
Add suitable passive loudspeakers and the physical system can remain very compact.
Klimax DSM is designed around a different philosophy. It expects the rest of a flagship system to exist around it, whether that involves separate amplification or compatible Exakt products.
If simplicity and low box count are genuine priorities, do not assume Klimax is automatically the better answer simply because it sits at the top of the range.
Selekt DSM vs Klimax DSM: who should choose which?
Choose Selekt DSM if…
- you value modularity
- you may want to alter the system architecture later
- internal amplification is useful
- you want Organik within a configurable platform
- you want to tailor expenditure around your existing system
- a compact one-box route appeals.
Choose Klimax DSM if…
- you want Linn’s flagship DSM platform
- you already have or are planning suitably high-level amplification and speakers
- you do not need internal power amplification
- digital source quality is one of the main priorities in the system
- you want the complete Klimax architecture rather than a modular route towards a particular specification.
The crucial point is that neither list describes a “better listener”.
They describe two different system requirements.
Should you upgrade Selekt instead of moving to Klimax?
This is one of the more interesting questions for an existing Selekt owner.
Because Organik and other supported upgrades can extend the Selekt platform, moving to Klimax is not automatically the only way to develop the digital source.
The right answer depends on what you want to change.
If you are happy with Selekt’s architecture but want to develop the DAC or another supported area, upgrading the existing product may make more sense.
If what you really want is the complete Klimax source architecture, repeatedly adding modules to Selekt should not become a way of avoiding that conclusion.
Upgrade towards the product you actually want, not simply towards the next available component.
Listen to complete systems, not isolated specifications
The most useful Selekt DSM vs Klimax DSM comparison happens when both products are treated as part of complete systems.
Organik appears in both conversations. Space Optimisation appears in both. Exakt can appear in both.
The products remain different because the architecture around those technologies is different.
Rococo Systems can demonstrate Linn equipment through our London Showroom and our Epping Demonstration Facility, located between Ongar and Epping. If you already own amplification or loudspeakers you intend to keep, tell us before the comparison so the systems can be considered in the right context.
You can explore the current Selekt DSM range, view Klimax DSM Audio, or book a demonstration to compare the relevant options.
For many buyers, the answer will not be “Klimax because it is higher in the range”. It will be whichever architecture gives the complete system the clearest direction, whether that means Selekt’s remarkable flexibility or Klimax DSM’s more focused flagship approach.
